В беседе с начинающими писателями А.Н.Толстой рассказывал, как в 1909 году после творческих поисков, идущих еще в русле подражания, он «напал на собственную тему. Это были рассказы моей матери, моих родственников об уходящем и ушедшем мире разоряющегося дворянства. Мир чудаков, красочных и нелепых. В 1909–1910 годах на фоне наступающего капитализма, перед войной, когда Россия быстро превращалась в полуколониальную державу, — недавнее прошлое — эти чудаки предстали передо мной во всем великолепии типов уходящей крепостной эпохи. Это была художественная находка»
